Fragrance 101: Essential Oil vs Natural Fragrance vs Synthetic Fragrance

What’s In A Fragrance?

When shopping for body care products, fragrance type in the product can raise a lot of questions. What’s the difference between essential oil fragrance, natural fragrance, and synthetic fragrance? And which one is actually better for your skin?

Here’s a clear breakdown of fragrance types—and why a balanced approach often makes the most sense in body care.

Essential Oil Fragrance

Essential oils are aromatic extracts from plants such as lavender, citrus, eucalyptus, and peppermint. They can provide authentic botanical character; complexity and depth that feels natural and comforting; and align with plant-based formulation philosophies. Essential oils are chemically complex and can contain naturally occurring fragrance allergens. Dermatology research consistently identifies fragrance components—including essential oils—as common contributors to skin sensitivity in some individuals, particularly at higher concentrations or after oxidation. Natural does not automatically mean gentler. This is why essential oils must be used intentionally and at appropriate levels—especially in leave-on products such as body care.

Natural Fragrance

The term natural fragrance can be confusing. It does not have a strict legal definition in U.S. cosmetic labeling. It typically refers to fragrance blends made from nature including trees, plants and extracted from animals. However, natural notes don’t last long and are difficult to recreate consistently as natural sources can be impacted by environmental issues such as a heatwave or pesticides; making it difficult or impossible to recreate the fragrance.

While the term “natural fragrance” can be helpful, it does not always indicate:

  • Specific allergen content
  • Stability in a finished product
  • Long-term scent consistency

That’s why the focus on fragrance type should be less on the label language and more on how the fragrance performs on skin.

Synthetic Fragrance: a misunderstood ingredient category

Synthetic fragrance ingredients are aroma molecules created through chemical synthesis or designed to be identical to those found in nature. In body care formulations, synthetics play an important role by offering:

  • Consistency: Essential oils vary by harvest; synthetics help maintain a consistent scent profile
  • Stability: Better performance in lotions, washes, and creams
  • Precision: Allows fragrance creation without relying on higher levels of naturally occurring sensitizers
  • Sustainability: Helps reduce pressure on slow-growing or resource-intensive botanicals

Synthetic does not mean unsafe. These ingredients are widely studied and used within established safety guidelines.

How Do I Know If Fragrances Are Safe?

In the U.S., cosmetic fragrances—whether natural or synthetic—must be safe for their intended use. Regulatory oversight from the FDA, along with safety standards informed by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) and research from the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), guide how fragrance materials are evaluated and used.

Fragrance safety is determined by ingredient selection, formulation, and concentration—not whether something is labeled “natural” or “synthetic.”

Choosing the right fragrance type for your skin

  • Prefer botanical scents and tolerate fragrance well: essential-oil-forward blends may suit you
  • Want consistent, spa-grade scent performance: blends with essential oils and safe synthetics offer reliability
  • Have sensitive skin: patch testing and moderation matter more than fragrance origin
